At a lively AGM of the Donegal Woodland Owners Society Limited (DWOSL) the main topics of discussion included timber harvesting and rising timber demand, the wood energy market, forest machinery and training. .
DWOSL firmly believe that Farm Forestry must double Ireland’s forest cover by 2030, thereby creating sustainable jobs throughout Ireland, while feeding the growing demand from our timber processing industries. With our tree growth competitive advantage farm forestry is also providing a vital range of ecosystem services and producing very valuable home-grown energy.
DWOSL members are convinced that now is the time to grow this proven, labour intensive industry, rooted in Ireland, for the benefit of Irish citizens and the environment.
“Our trees don’t know recession, just growth. We now live in a very challenging climate, lets all treat this natural resource with due respect. Farm foresters want to invest in and fast track this sector”, stated John Jackson, DWOSL Chairman.
A meeting with the Minister Simon Coveney, Agriculture, Marine and Food, with responsibility for Forestry, is being arranged.
Developing Woodland in County Donegal
County Donegal has the second highest forestry cover in Ireland with 58,183 hectares. With 40% of this resource in private ownership, Donegal Woodland Owners Society Limited has been established to maximise the value of this resource for woodland owners by creating added value through sustainable local employment.
At present, annually, over 200,000 tons (over 90%) of timber leaves Donegal unprocessed with little or no added value, as it leaves the forest gate and County Donegal in raw saw log form. Today, with the increasing volumes of timber now coming onto the market from the newly established forests in the private sector, Donegal Woodland Owners Society Limited (DWOSL) is determined to build up new and existing forestry enterprises and a forestry culture within Donegal.
